The 2012 Coats of Caring distribution will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Park Place Community Center, 802 E. 5th Street from 8 to 11 a.m. Please note the change of location from previous years.
Led by Community Hospital Anderson, this community-wide initiative has been keeping Madison County warm every winter since 2001. Each year, approximately 1000 coats are given away. The event began in Community Anderson's cafeteria, but quickly outgrew that location. It has been held at the Wigwam for years, but has now moved to Park Place Community Center.
The coat collection begins when it's still warm outside. People donate new and gently used adults' and children's coats. Other community members and organizations donate money through Community Anderson's Foundation that goes toward the purchase of new coats.
On the distribution day, people are usually lined up before dawn to receive coats, showing the great need for this program in Madison County. Volunteers from Community Anderson and other area organizations spend their Saturday morning setting up the event and then assisting patrons pick out the perfect coats for themselves and their families.
Community Anderson's mission extends beyond providing quality health care to the people in our community, to offering support and compassion for their overall well-being. We feel that Coats of Caring does just that.
