As part of the Madison County Sexual Assault Treatment Center's recent stuffed animal drive, 12-year-old Sara Woolum from Elwood entered into and won the FOX 59/Old National Pay it Forward Challenge. She donated her $5,000 winnings to the pediatric sexual assault patients, allowing the center to serve the non-traditional needs of the patients. Items like snacks, robes, blankets and stuffed animals can be purchased and kept on hand for when the need arises.
Sara Woolum, with a little help from her mom Jennifer Hicks, collected money from friends and family and added it to a $200 gift card from Old National to shop for the center. They purchased snacks, pajamas, blankets, robes, underwear and more. Their story was a huge success, generating fifty percent of the total votes in a six person contest on FOX 59.
"When Sara and her mom brought their first donation, the items kept coming and coming," said Holly Renz, Madison County Sexual Assault Treatment Center program director, "I could not believe all they were able to provide. These gifts and the check from Old National with help countless victims for years to come. The fact that a 12 year old girl made it happen only makes it better."
To show gratitude to Sara and celebrate this young lady's legacy, Community Hospital Anderson dedicated the room these items are stored in as Sara's Closet. Using her actual signature as inspiration for the logo, we held a ribbon cutting on Friday, June 3 to honor her gift. Sara's friends and family, along with several Community Hospital Anderson employees and community members, gathered to honor Sara and celebrate the dedication.
When a child has been sexually assaulted, there is a place in Madison County where immediate treatment and support is available. Thanks to the generosity of donors like Sara Woolum, we are able to stock Sara’s Closet with comforting robes, blankets and stuff¬ed animals for these children as they go through their examinations.
The healing can begin at the Madison County Sexual Assault Treatment Center at Community Hospital Anderson.
